Selling your Horse with Equine Classifieds
03/23/2009 Equine classifieds are the best way to sell a horse—without the high cost of a broker or an auction.
While Ebay or Craigslist are great websites for buying and selling Breyer horses, it takes more work when you’re dealing with the real thing. That’s why equine classifieds (also known as horse classifieds) are so useful. Equine classifieds are the best way to sell a horse—without the high cost of a broker or an auction.
Most equine classifieds have moved online. Websites like GoEquine.com have elaborate systems of equine classifieds which put the newspaper classifieds to shame. With equine classifieds, you can now find detailed profiles of horses for sale, with information about the age, color, breed, medical history, and much more available for the equine classifieds buyer. Plus, since many online equine classifieds have a moderator, fraud can be less common than with newspaper equine classifieds. If you’re interested in using equine classifieds to sell your horse, we have some tips and advice to share with you.
When selling a horse, it pays to do a little research with other equine classifieds. Scan the “Selling” section of popular equine classifieds. What do you notice? The most successful equine classifieds are those that provide the most information. Be sure your equine classified covers:
1) The appearance of the horse. Using a picture is the surest way to make your equine classifieds ad stand out. Also include a description of the age, height, color, weight, and breed in your equine classifieds ad. In cases where your horse is of a mixed breed, put what mix; in cases where you know the pedigree or the parents, put that information in your equine classifieds. Informative equine classifieds make the buyer feel safe.
2) A list of appropriate owners. How is the horse trained? Your equine classifieds should say if your horse is appropriate for new riders or experienced ones, young children or adults. This keeps a potential buyer from feeling like the equine classifieds ad has been dishonest if he or she cannot ride the horse they have bought.
3) A description of the horse’s talents. Has the horse won any pageants or races? An equine classified is the perfect place to brag about it. Include information about the horse’s temperament or safety in the equine classifieds as well. If there are any negative qualities, don’t leave them out of your equine classifieds ad: just come up with ways to phrase a problem spot in the best possible light. And don’t forget to use this section of your equine classifieds ad to talk about your horse’s beautiful mane, or shining coat.
4) Training. Some people want horses who can barrel race, while others search the equine classifieds for older horses that can handle a well-worn trail. If your horse has been trained in Western or English, jumping or endurance, it’s advisable you mention it in your equine classifieds ad.
5) Business Details. This is the most important section of any ad in the equine classifieds. Business details such as email address, telephone number, address, and asking price are essential tools for buyers reading your equine classified ad.
Once you have made contact with a potential equine classifieds buyer, you need to set up an appointment so the buyer can look at your horse. The best equine classifieds ad in the world won’t close a deal if your horse is dirty or sick, so make sure the horse is clean and in good health (unless ill health was described in the equine classifieds). If the equine classifieds buyer would like to take a test ride, make sure he or she signs a liability waiver first.
I’ve found that when selling a horse on equine classifieds, there’s always a bit of skepticism that needs to be overcome. Horses are an investment, and people scan the equine classifieds to make sure they’re getting a good one. That’s why I like to tell potential buyers why I’m selling my horse. That way, they don’t think I’m misusing the equine classifieds to unload a sick or lame horse. If your buyer is serious, encourage them to pay for a pre-purchase exam. This is a vet checkup that determines the horse’s health.
Once you start discussing price, it’s up to you whether or not you’ll negotiate the asking price you’ve listed on the equine classifieds. The firmer your price, the more you’ll have to justify it. If you’re unhappy with the price, you can always re-list your equine classified ad and wait for the right buyer. Don’t be pressured into a situation where you feel uncomfortable.
